Seiko Prospex Diver’s Shogun Titanium
Whether it's a Sumo, a Samurai, a Turtle, a Monster, or a Tuna... The majority of Seiko's diving watches have a unique moniker. "Shogun," another ultra-durable, relatively accessible diver's model that has remained in the shadow of its more successful predecessors and is frequently reserved for the home market, is one we haven't heard much about recently. This year, things are changing with the addition of two new Shogun models to the Prospex line: the Automatic Diver's 200m Titanium SPB189J1 and SPB191J1. And we're not talking about models that are only available in Japan's domestic market (JDM). They are limited editions and we have a single SPB189J1.
There's a truth behind every nickname. The sobriquet for this watch is Shogun, which means military general in Japanese, so it's easy to see how there's a sense of power and commanding presence here. The full armour of the case, the sharp lines, and the materials' sturdiness earned the first reference SBDC007 the collector's moniker Shogun. As we discussed in this post, this watch, which first emerged on the market in the early 2010s, has long been restricted to the Japanese market. With a case similar to a Samurai watch, hands similar to early Monster watches, and the same calibre as a Sumo, this watch may not have stood out enough and was quickly discontinued.
The Shogun is back for 2020, and we're not talking about JDM-only models. The new Seiko Prospex Automatic Diver's 200m Titanium SPB189J1 and SPB191J1 (thus the moniker...) are classic Shogun timepieces, with a mid-range movement, excellent toughness, and, of course, titanium casings. Seiko has introduced additional colors to make the 2020 Shogun watches more appealing, in addition to keeping the general design largely unchanged.
First and foremost, the watch's original design has been retained, with its imposing and crisp shell. These new references, which have all the hallmarks of a Shogun watch, such as robust shoulders, acute crown protection, angled inner lugs, and a sharply notched bezel, can't be mistaken for Shogun timepieces. As you'd expect from a watch with this moniker, the casing is made of brushed titanium with Seiko's so-called "super-hard coating." Titanium allows for a lighter watch, in addition to its corrosion resistance and durability; a stainless steel King Samurai weighs 205 grams on the bracelet and 99 kilograms on the silicone strap, but a titanium watch weighs 121 grams on the band and 99 grams on the silicone strap.
The unidirectional bezel's inlays, which are also made of titanium, have been modified for improved aesthetics. The crucial first 15 minutes are displayed on a black background, while the remainder is bronze/grey or anthracite, depending on the model, and is made of titanium in a two-tone color scheme. The dials come in black or white, and the hour markers have been redesigned to be triangular rather than the dots that were previously used, and are covered by a sapphire crystal with a magnifier over the date. The hands, on the other hand, are inspired in the same way as before.
The new Automatic Diver's 200m Titanium SPB189J1 and SPB191J1 "Shogun" watches use the same in-house calibre 6R35 as most other mid-range Prospex watches, an enhancement over the 6R15 that was previously employed inside the case. This programmed movement, which continues to beat at 3Hz, now has a power reserve of 70 hours.
Future owners will be able to choose between a bracelet and a strap, depending on the model. The titanium bracelet on the black SPB189J1 is secured by a three-fold clasp with secure lock, push-button release, and dive extender. The SPB191J1 comes with a pin buckle and a black (well-integrated) silicone strap.
From November 2020, stores worldwide will be able to purchase the Seiko Prospex Automatic Diver's 200m Titanium SPB189J1 and SPB191J1 "Shogun." The white model costs R32 950 here.
