Caring for Watches

10 Tips on Caring for your Watch

A watch can be damaged by many things. That includes dirt, dust, moisture, and shocks, Extreme temperatures and outside UV radiation. Watchmakers develop engineering and technological solutions to make watches more resilient and reliable. Nowadays, technology and research has opened up production of watches that are sealed better and more shock resistant and even more resilient than previously.

However the individual user is still in charge of caring for the watch they love at the end of the day. Fine mechanical watches will work well for longer if treated and cared for. Watches are inherently intricate mechanisms, usually involving 200 to 400 tiny movement parts. Care and maintenance are the key to longevity.

But our tips are as follows:

1. KEEP YOUR WATCH WOUND.

Modern lubricants are long lasting however they do dry and conceal within time. Lubricants are spread out and kept flowing everytime you wind your watch. Not recommended daily but Monthly at the very least.

It's a good habit to consistently wind up manual watches at the same time each day.

2. DON'T WIND YOUR WATCH ON YOUR WRIST.

When most people access the crown while the watch is on your wrist, they work on an angle that puts unnecessary pressure on the stem and risk damage to the mechanisms of the crown.

3. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU WIND YOUR WATCH.

Care not to walk or risk your watch from falling. Keep your watch close while working with it as to avoid dropping it on the floor, water or any dirty surface.

4. KEEP IT CLEAN, BUT NEVER WITH SOAP.

Use a microfiber polishing cloth on the watch. Never use soap and water. Keep the crown fully secured when cleaning with a damp cloth. Avoid damaging your strap using too much water if it is leather.

5. CHECK THE GASKETS AND SEALS REGULARLY.

Watches have a high water resistance rating, overall but the material used in gaskets and seals can dry out. Check water resistance annually. Watchmakers usually have machines to check water resistance for you.

6. YOUR WARRANTY.

Make sure to go through your watches warranty located in your watches box in came in on purchase. Make sure to use it effectively.

7. DON'T PUSH YOUR WATCH TO ITS LIMITS.

Go through the details of the watch and keep to the suggested care in your watched brochure. Pushing it past those limits will shorten the longevity of the watch.

8. CHANGING STRAPS SHOULD BE DONE VERY CAREFULLY.

Take extreme care and consider that the straps are held by a very thin or sensitive rod. Ask a professional to assist or show you how.

9. SERVICE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

Lubricants congeal and dry over time. The Cogs and teeth wear down. The average modern watch has 691,200 beats a day. Service your watch the same way you would your car. Once a year is more than enough.

10. ENJOY THE WATCH!

If one look at all the problems a watches run into, few people would fully enjoy their watch.

Please wear your watch and enjoy it. A fine watch should be worn and enjoyed. Wearing it helps it work and allows the watch to stay wound and lubricants working the way it should.
